Bulb fountain in Saint-Paul de Vence (1850) Fontaine de Soleil, Place Massena, Nice. Fountains in France provided drinking water to the inhabitants of the ancient Roman cities of France, and to French monasteries and villages during the Middle Ages. Later, they were symbols of royal power and grandeur in the gardens of the kings of France.
As of 2008, water is dispensed from a series of taps set into stone in a circle around the base of one of the smaller towers of the Upper Basilica. In 2002 the Water Walk was introduced, across the Gave river and slightly downstream from the Grotto. It consists of a series of nine stations at which there is a small Lourdes water font.

The fontaine Saint-Michel was part of the great project for the reconstruction of Paris overseen by Baron Haussmann during the French Second Empire. In 1855 Haussmann completed an enormous new boulevard, originally called boulevard de Sébastopol-rive-gauche, now called Boulevard Saint-Michel, which opened up the small place Pont-Saint-Michel into a much larger space.
