A break at a zero-width space does not cause a hyphen (or anything else) to appear; use {{Soft hyphen}} if you want that. The zero-width space character has a higher breaking priority than the hyphen character (-), so when using it in a phrase with hyphen, it is recommended to place a zero-width space immediately after each hyphen as well.
The zero-width space can be used to mark word breaks in languages without visible space between words, such as Thai, Myanmar, Khmer, and Japanese. [ 1 ] In justified text, the rendering engine may add inter-character spacing, also known as letter spacing, between letters separated by a zero-width space, unlike around fixed-width spaces.
A second common application of non-breaking spaces is in plain text file formats such as SGML, HTML, TeX and LaTeX, whose rendering engines are programmed to treat sequences of whitespace characters (space, newline, tab, form feed, etc.) as if they were a single character (but this behavior can be overridden).
HTML and XML provide ways to reference Unicode characters when the characters themselves either cannot or should not be used. The ZWNBSP is originally and currently used as the byte order mark (BOM) at the start of a file. However, if encountered elsewhere, it should, according to Unicode, be treated as a word joiner, a no-break space of zero width.
