Sigma Tau was an engineering honor society. [1] [2] In 1974, it merged with Tau Beta Pi, the oldest engineering honor society and the second oldest collegiate honor society in the United States. As part of the merger, Tau Beta Pi absorbed twelve Sigma Tau chapters into its existing chapters located on the same campuses.
Beta Sigma Tau merged into Pi Lambda Phi on November 1, 1960. [2] Two chapters reverted to local status, and later joined other national fraternities. [6] An unrelated local group, Beta Sigma Tau (local) at the University of Toledo, was formed in 1996, influenced by the ideals of the original fraternity. [8]
Tau Beta Sigma was founded at Texas Technological College (now Texas Tech University) by Wava Banes (Turner Henry). [1] Due to corporation laws in the state of Texas at the time, however, the Texas Tech sisters surrendered their name, ritual, jewelry, constitution and Alpha chapter designation in January 1946 to the local band sorority at Oklahoma State University.
