Abercromby Professorship of Archaeology is a chair at the University of Edinburgh.It was endowed in the will of John Abercromby, 5th Baron Abercromby (1841–1924), who left instructions to establish a chair in prehistoric archaeology at the university.

Under his leadership, the archaeology department maintained its strengths in prehistoric Europe and Near Eastern archaeology. Trevor Watkins is a British archaeologist and emeritus professor of Near Eastern prehistory at the University of Edinburgh. [1] He has worked extensively on the Neolithic Revolution in Southwest Asia, [2] including translating Jacques Cauvin's seminal work The Birth of the Gods and the Origins of Agriculture into English.
In 1995 he was appointed Professor of Visual Arts and Archaeology at Flinders, retiring in 2003. [4] His other appointments have included Visiting Professorship at the University of Edinburgh and Senior Honorary Research Fellow in the Department of Archaeology at the University of Glasgow (from 1998 with his wife). [1] Ruth Megaw died in 2013. [5]
