Putnam Township is a township in Tioga County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 401 at the 2020 census. [2] Putnam Township is the village of Covington. Covington was formerly a borough that chose to become a township in 1892. It was settled in 1801.

Luke Townsend – who was the au pair for James Townsend's daughter, Mary, prior to his emancipation – established the first Sunday School in Putnam County and is credited as the founder of the congregation that eventually became Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Greencastle, Indiana, at one time the largest Black church in Indiana. It was purchased in 1697 by Adolphus Philipse, a wealthy landowner of Dutch descent in the Province of New York, and in time became today's Putnam County. Philipse bought the roughly 250 sq mi (650 km 2 ) tract from two Dutch traders who had purchased it from "Wiccopee chiefs" of the Wappinger native American people.
