Edinburgh Castle is a historic castle in Edinburgh, Scotland.It stands on Castle Rock, which has been occupied by humans since at least the Iron Age.There has been a royal castle on the rock since the reign of Malcolm III in the 11th century, and the castle continued to be a royal residence until 1633.
The term was first used descriptively in W. M. Gilbert's Edinburgh in the Nineteenth Century (1901), describing the city "with its Castle and Palace and the royal mile between", and was further popularised as the title of a guidebook by R. T. Skinner published in 1920, "The Royal Mile (Edinburgh) Castle to Holyrood(house)". [2]

The Chapel was long thought to have been the oratory of Margaret herself, but is now thought to have been established in the 12th century.
