Founded in 1889, Clemson is the second-largest university by enrollment in South Carolina. For the fall 2023 semester, the university enrolled a total of 22,875 undergraduate students and 5,872 graduate students, and the student/faculty ratio was 15:1. Clemson's 1,400-acre (570 ha) campus is in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

The Campus of Clemson University was originally the site of U.S. Vice President John C. Calhoun 's plantation, named Fort Hill. The Colony of Virginia was an English, later British, colonial settlement in North America between 1606 and 1776. The first effort to create an English settlement in the area was chartered in 1584 and established in 1585; the resulting Roanoke Colony lasted for three attempts totaling six years. In 1590, the colony was abandoned.
