The falls have been named after the legendary king Ravana, who is connected to the famous Indian epic, the Ramayana. According to legend, it is said that Ravana (who was the king of Lanka at the time) had kidnapped princess Sita , and had hidden her in the caves behind this waterfall, now simply known as the Ravana Ella Cave.

The waterfall is about 45ft high [1] and is formed by Algama Oya, a tributary of Attanagalu Oya. [2] It is also known as Uduwaka Falls or Devin Penna Ella. Some of the scenes from the popular Sri Lankan film Siri Parakum scenes were shot near the waterfall. [3] This is one of the two waterfalls on Attanagalu Oya and the other is Bopagama Ella.
The waterfall was named after a popular ancient fairytale story. [2] It forms part of Maha Oya and it is considered as one of the tourist destination sites in Sri Lanka. [ 3 ]
