Fonseca's modern founder Manoel Pedro Guimaraens was a supporter of King Pedro IV's (pictured) liberal reforms, which led to his having to flee Portugal to England hidden away in an empty Port wine barrel. Fonseca Guimaraens, often simply called Fonseca, is one of the largest Port wine houses in Portugal. [1]

He married Margaret Collett Dalgleish on 29 August 1837 at St. Giles-in-the-Field, London and had 10 children, all of whom were born in Oporto, Portugal. Guimaraens was born on 27 October, 1935 [1] to parents Charles Bruce and Cathleen May in Vila Nova de Gaia. [2] He was educated at Abingdon School from 1946 until 1953 [3] and his elder brother John 'Gordon' Guimaraens also attended Abingdon School from 1946 to 1952. [4]
Yeatman was born in Chelsea, London. He spent some of his early years in Oporto, the principal city and port of northern Portugal, where his father worked as a port wine merchant, a family business connected with Taylor's Port. From 1911 he was educated at Marlborough College. [1] In World War I he was commissioned into the Royal Field Artillery.
