The PayStar was a severe service conventional introduced in 1972. It used the same cab as the TranStar 4200/4300 and had a long, rectangular hood. It had a set-back front axle with a butterfly hood and flat diamond plate fenders. In 1973 a set-forward front axle model with a tilting fiberglass hood was added.
In place of the Twin-I-Beam suspension, a solid front axle was retained; redesigned front fenders to accommodate a wider front track (and larger wheels) were used. [5] The front fascia was derived largely from the fourth-generation heavy-duty F-Series, adopting a full-width grille between the headlamps.
Normally there is a single undriven front axle on semi-elliptical leaf springs, but driven and tandem steer (popular in Canada) axles are available. The base rear suspension is a Mack tandem (two powered axles). Granites are also available with single and tridem (three driven) axles, different axle/suspension combination types.
The M1 had a ladder frame with three live beam axles, the front on leaf springs, the rear tandem on leaf springs with locating arms. All models had a 181 in (4.60 m) wheelbase. The M1 weighed 27,330 lb (12,400 kg), the -A1 31,200 lb (14,200 kg). Brakes were full air, the tires were 11.00x20 with dual rear tires.
