Newport is a town in Herkimer County, New York, United States. The population was 2,302 at the 2010 census. [ 3 ] The town, located on the western edge of the county, contains the village of Newport .
This system is still maintained in 17 counties in New York, the other counties (outside New York City) adopted a system of county legislatures with members elected in districts according to the number of inhabitants, independent of town boundaries.

New York State Route 28, Main Street, is a north–south highway through the village, leading northwest 4 miles (6 km) to Poland and southeast the same distance to Middleville. Herkimer, the county seat, is 12 miles (19 km) to the south of Newport on NY 28. County Road 34 passes through the part of Newport on the west bank of West Canada Creek.
The two major remaining appointments of the borough presidents are one member each on the New York City Planning Commission [11] and two members each of the New York City Panel for Educational Policy. Borough presidents generally adopt specific projects to promote while in office, but since 1990 have been mainly ceremonial leaders.
