Anchoa are small, silvery fish that range anywhere from 5.8–24 centimetres (2.3–9.4 in). The smallest of these species is the Anchoa belizensis and the largest is Anchoa spinifer . These fish are distributed throughout the mediterranean sea and Americas, mostly in the Pacific and the Atlantic Ocean.
The range of the species also extends along the Atlantic coast of Europe to the south of Norway. Spawning occurs between October and March, but not in water colder than 12 °C (54 °F). The anchovy appears to spawn at least 100 kilometres (55 nautical miles) from the shore, near the surface of the water.
