Barts was founded in 1123 by Rahere (died 1144, and entombed in the nearby Priory Church of St Bartholomew the Great), a favourite courtier of King Henry I.The dissolution of the monasteries did not affect the running of Barts as a hospital, but left it in a precarious position by removing its income.
St Bartholomew's Chapel is at the heart of the original hospital. Since the nineteenth century rebuild of the hospital it is now a short walk down the hill. The chapel is a grade II* listed building, number 1268238. [ 17 ]

It was formed in 1995 by the merger of the London Hospital Medical College (the first school to be granted an official charter for medical teaching in 1785) and the Medical College of St Bartholomew's Hospital (established in 1843, with medical teaching dating back to the founding of the hospital in 1123).

Charles Knight is a British professor of cardiology and chief executive of St Bartholomew's Hospital, part of Barts Health NHS Trust.. In 1994 he assisted in the first percutaneous alcohol septal ablation, a non-surgical method for the treatment of hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy as an alternative to open heart surgery, and subsequently specialised in the procedure.
