Using a phoropter to determine a prescription for eyeglasses. An eyeglass prescription is an order written by an eyewear prescriber, such as an optometrist, that specifies the value of all parameters the prescriber has deemed necessary to construct and/or dispense corrective lenses appropriate for a patient.
A phoropter measurement of a patient reads −8.00 D sphere and −5.25 D cylinder with an axis of 85° for one eye (the notation for which is typically written as −8 −5.25×85). The phoropter measurement is made at a common vertex distance of 12 mm from the eye.
Typical values for a contact lens are from 8.0 to 10.0 mm. The base curve is the radius of the sphere of the back of the lens that the prescription describes (the lower the number, the steeper the curve of the cornea and the lens, the higher the number, the flatter the curve of the cornea and the lens).
As a lens, a transparent sphere of any material with refractive index (n) greater than air (n > 1.00) bends parallel rays of light to a focal point. For most glassy materials the focal point is only slightly beyond the surface of the ball, on the side opposite to where the rays entered.
