The sRGB standard defines the chromaticities of the red, green, and blue primaries, the colors where one of the three channels is nonzero and the other two are zero. The gamut of chromaticities that can be represented in sRGB is the color triangle defined by these primaries, which are set such that the range of colors inside the triangle is well within the range of colors visible to a human ...
A 1775 color triangle by Tobias Mayer. The sRGB color triangle, shown as a subset of x,y space, a chromaticity space based on CIE 1931 colorimetry. A color triangle is an arrangement of colors within a triangle, based on the additive or subtractive combination of three primary colors at its corners.
With the predominance of 24-bit displays, the use of the full 16.7 million colors of the HTML RGB color code no longer poses problems for most viewers. The sRGB color space (a device-independent color space [ 23 ] ) for HTML was formally adopted as an Internet standard in HTML 3.2, [ 24 ] [ 25 ] though it had been in use for some time before that.
It is able to store a wider range of color values than sRGB. The Wide Gamut color space is an expanded version of the Adobe RGB color space , developed in 1998. As a comparison, the Adobe Wide Gamut RGB color space encompasses 77.6% of the visible colors specified by the Lab color space , whilst the standard Adobe RGB color space covers just 50.6%.
A color space may be arbitrary, i.e. with physically realized colors assigned to a set of physical color swatches with corresponding assigned color names (including discrete numbers in – for example – the Pantone collection), or structured with mathematical rigor (as with the NCS System, Adobe RGB and sRGB). A "color space" is a useful ...
RGB use in color space definitions employ primaries (and often a white point) based on the RGB color model, to map to real world color. Applying Grassmann's law of light additivity, the range of colors that can be produced are those enclosed within the triangle on the chromaticity diagram defined using the primaries as vertices. [3]
Diagram in CIE rg chromaticity space showing the construction of the triangle specifying the CIE XYZ color space. The triangle C b-C g-C r is just the xy = (0, 0), (0, 1), (1, 0) triangle in CIE xy chromaticity space. The line connecting C b and C r is the alychne.
Created to describe a typical 1990s CRT screen, sRGB has a limited gamut and is unable to describe every real color. As Wikipedia templates take a hex triplet as input, all colors must have a value in the sRGB range. Fitting a color into the range is known as gamut mapping. The current practice is to use an scRGB interpretation scaled to 0-255.
