The Jamaica Premier League was formed in 1973 to serve as the top tier of Jamaican professional club football. [5] The league's inaugural season kicked off on September 22, 1973 as the Craven A National Club League Championships, and finished with Santos F.C. as the first title winners.
The twelve teams that currently compete in the league are based in the parishes of Clarendon, Manchester, St. Catherine and St. Elizabeth. At the end of each season the winners qualify for the National Premier League Playoff along with the winners of the KSAFA Super League, Eastern Confederation Super League and Western Confederation Super League.
