Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (IATA: HYD, ICAO: VOHS) is an international airport that serves Hyderabad, the capital of the Indian state of Telangana. It is located in Shamshabad, about 24 kilometres (15 mi) south of Hyderabad and it was opened on 23 March 2008 to replace Begumpet Airport, which was till then the sole civilian airport serving Hyderabad.
Lothkunta is 7 km away from Secunderabad Railway station, 12 km away from the Old Hyderabad Airport in Begumpet Begumpet Airport, and about 40 km from New International Airport in Shamshabad Rajiv Gandhi International Airport. TSRTC runs buses here connecting Lothkunta to all parts of the city.
The state-owned TSRTC runs the city bus service, connecting to all the major parts of the city. It is approximately 10 km from Secunderabad railway station, 12 km from Begumpet Old Airport, and 51 km from Shamshabad International Airport.
Introduced in 2011, these buses were earlier branded as Indra. Rajadhani buses act as a bridge between mid-level service "Super Luxury" and premium service "Garuda Plus". These buses are generally operated to state capital Hyderabad from various district headquarters. These are also operated on high-frequency long-distance routes.
The Hyderabad Outer Ring Road also helps reduce the travel time from Rajiv Gandhi International Airport to cities like Nizamabad and Adilabad as it connects to NH44. The expressway is fenced and 33 radial roads connect it with the Inner Ring Road , [ 4 ] and the upcoming Regional Ring Road .
The 3 routes which lead to Shamshabad from the city were NH44 (NH7) via Nehru Zoological Park, Srisailam Highway (NH765) and the Inner Ring Road, Hyderabad via Mehdipatnam. Out of the 3 routes, the NH44 already had a very high volumes of traffic and was not in a position to withstand any further rise in the traffic.
The Nehru Outer Ring Road serves as a controlled-access expressway between Gachibowli and Shamshabad. [52] Metered taxis and buses are available as transports to the airport. [54] Hyderabad is connected with direct flights to all major destinations in India, as well as to various locations in Middle East, Southeast Asia, Europe and North America.
