The historic U.S.Highway 80 passes through Buckeye. The roots of the U.S. 80 date back to the late 1846 and was one of the first roads that went through the Arizona Territory. The road began in Yuma and followed the Gila River to Buckeye and so on. The highway has been known by various names including the Bankhead Highway and the Old Spanish Trail.
The first survey conducted in 1867, involved the first 36 miles of Arizona. Up until 1874, this was the epicenter of all surveying in Arizona for property deeds. Waddell moved to the area to oversee the firm's interests in the project. He served on the board of the Maricopa Water District and invested in land through his interests in the Arizona Citrus Land Company and the Waddell Ranch Company.
