The queen begins the building process by constructing queen cells and laying eggs that will hatch larvae. The larvae enter the pupal phase after about a month. Once more of these female workers have been produced (late July or early August), the colony size begins to grow significantly as worker cell construction begins.

The Llano Yellow Jacket Band has won 38 consecutive first division marching awards, going back to 1979. It has also made a handful of state marching contest appearances, the most recent being in 2004 when the band made the state finals. The Yellow Jacket Band placed in the top five in the state in 1983, 1985 and 1987.
After emerging from the diapause when winter ends, the fertilized queen searches for a nest site. When it is located, a small nest is formed. The queen continues to forage for construction materials and food until four to seven workers have emerged. At this point, the queen focuses solely on laying eggs and the nest continues to expand.
