Gage County is a county in the U.S. state of Nebraska. As of the 2020 United States Census, the population was 21,704. [1] Its county seat is Beatrice. [2] The county was created in 1855 and organized in 1857. [3] [4] [5] It was formed from land taken from the Otoe in an 1854 treaty.
Gage County had to raise property taxes to the maximum amount permitted under the law in order to pay the jury award. [5] It was expected that the county would make payments twice a year after property taxes were collected; the Beatrice Six, including the heirs of White, received their first payment in June 2019. [ 8 ]
