Haldia is an industrial port city in Purba Medinipur district in the Indian state of West Bengal. It has a major river port and industrial belt located approximately 124 km (77 mi) southwest of Kolkata near the mouth of the Hooghly River , one of the distributaries of the Ganges .

Haldia Law College at Haldia was established in 2002. It offers (1) Five-year integrated B.A.-Ll.B. (Hons), (2) Three-year Ll.B. and (3) Two-year Ll.M. courses. [22] Haldia Institute of Technology at Haldia is a private-initiated engineering college offering degree courses. It was established in 1995.
Haldia Dock Complex is eight meters above sea level and is located at 21.20 north and 88.06 east. [7] [8] It is 156 nautical miles (289 km; 180 mi) north of Paradip Port by sea and river route, and 104 kilometres (65 mi) south of Kolkata Dock System by river route. [9]
As per 2001 census, Haldia block had a total population of 81,585, out of which 41,880 were males and 39,705 were females. Haldia block registered a population growth of -16.69 per cent during the 1991-2001 decade. Decadal growth for the combined Midnapore district was 14.87 per cent. [8] Decadal growth in West Bengal was 17.84 per cent. [9]
