The portion of modern Route 53 between the West Redding section of Redding and Bethel center was the northern half of the Norwalk and Danbury Turnpike. The road from Central Norwalk via New Canaan center to the New York state line was designated as State Highway 184 in 1922. Route 123 was commissioned in 1932 from the southern half of old Highway 184 (Norwalk to New Canaan) and a previously unnumbered road from there to the state line.
The Central or Midtown section of Norwalk, Connecticut is an urbanized area in roughly the geographic center of the city, north of the South Norwalk neighborhood and the Connecticut Turnpike. Wall Street, West Avenue and Belden Avenue are the main thoroughfares. It has also been called "Norwalk Center" or "Downtown Norwalk".
