The river was first known by its Māori name of Te Awa Whakatipu, with te awa literally translating as 'the river'. [7] The name Whakatipu is shared with several nearby geographic features, including Lake Wakatipu [a] and Whakatipu Kā Tuka (the Hollyford River) though this name is an archaic term and its original meaning is no longer known. Lake Wakatipu comes from the original Māori name Whakatipu wai-māori. [1] With a length of 80 kilometres (50 mi), it is New Zealand's longest lake, and, at 289 km 2 (112 sq mi), its third largest. The lake is also very deep, its floor being below sea level (−110 metres), with a maximum depth of 420 metres (1,380 ft).
The ship was named after Mount Earnslaw, a 2,889-metre (9,478 ft) peak at the head of Lake Wakatipu. She was to be 51.2 metres (168 ft 0 in) long, the biggest boat on the lake, and the largest steamship built in New Zealand. [4] Transporting the Earnslaw was no easy task. When construction was finally completed, she was dismantled.
