The company had completed the Kilbourn Dam upriver at Wisconsin Dells in 1909, but found it unprofitable, leading to the decision to build a larger dam at Prairie du Sac. [4] Construction of the new dam began in the winter of 1911 with general contractor J. O. Heyworth of Chicago and a crew of around 400 laborers. [5]
Prairie du Sac was so named because it was in the large Wisconsin River Valley where the Sauk Indians had a large settlement. [7] Although the name of the village dates from the early days of French fur traders, Prairie du Sac was established as a village by D.B. Crocker in 1840, largely as a Yankee-English village, [8] in contrast to its neighbor, Sauk City, which was settled largely by Germans.

Despite this, a 93-mile (150 km) stretch of the Wisconsin between its mouth and the Prairie du Sac Dam is free of any dams or barriers and is relatively free-flowing. In the late 1980s, this portion of the river was designated as a state riverway, and development alongside the river has been limited to preserve its scenic integrity.
