The current mansion that houses the governor is the second governor's mansion and was purchased in 1957 to house the governor and his family. The original residence, the Old Governor's Mansion in Columbus, was purchased after an embarrassing incident in 1916 occurred with the governor-elect James M. Cox.

Leggett was born on May 9, 1815, in New York City, at 90 (later 21) Beekman Street to parents Valentine Seaman and Anna Ferris. Her father died in 1817, and she (the youngest of ten children) was the last child still living in the family home. Following his death, she spent her summers with William Hicks, a wealthy merchant.

The house was built in 1886 for Frederick Lazarus Sr., president of the F&R Lazarus & Company and son of company founder Simon Lazarus. [3] The Lazarus family moved in about 1906 to a new and larger house at Bryden Road and S. Ohio Avenue; that house was demolished in 1924.
