Stanton Hall was designated as a National Historic Landmark in the late 20th century. [54] Located on the Mississippi River, the town long had an active nightlife, featuring jazz and blues created and played by Black American musicians. On April 23, 1940, 209 people died in a fire at the Rhythm Night Club, a black dance hall in Natchez. [55]
He was the son of Henry Bache Thornhill (son of Bache Thornhill [2]) and his wife Helen Pole, daughter of Charles Pole of Liverpool. [3] He was the last member of the family of Thornhill who had owned estates at Stanton Hall, Stanton-in-Peak since the end of the 17th century when John Thornhill married the heiress Mary Bache.
