Kutani ware (九谷焼, Kutani-yaki) is a style of Japanese porcelain traditionally supposed to be from Kutani, now a part of Kaga, Ishikawa, in the former Kaga Province. The Hirado daimyō family, the Matsura, established a village of Korean potters in the early 17th century. They made stoneware of the Karatsu ware type. In the next generation, in the mid-1630s, one of these, Sanojō (1610–1694), discovered a good source of kaolin, needed for porcelain, at Mikawachi.
