Area code 218 is a telephone area code in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) for the northern part of the U.S. state of Minnesota.It is assigned to the largest of Minnesota's original two numbering plan areas (NPAs), although its geographical boundaries have been modified since inception.
Minnesota was divided into a south-eastern area including the Twin-Cities with area code 612 and the rest of the state in the south-west, north, and north-east with area code 218. [2] In 1954, the southern half of 612 was designated a separate numbering plan area with area code 507 as the third area code for the state.
Area codes are also assigned for non-geographic purposes. The rules for numbering NPAs do not permit the digits 0 and 1 in the leading position.
