The Rover 16 saloon returned to production almost unchanged after the war, but with a different inlet manifold, and the horizontal SU carburettor was replaced with a Zenith downdraught unit, and the white metal crankshaft main bearings were replaced with shell bearings. The drop head coupe version was no longer listed.
The Rover M series (or M16) is a line of 4-cylinder, DOHC internal-combustion engine introduced by the Austin Rover Group in 1986 for the then-new Rover 800 series.. The M series was produced only in one cubic capacity – 1994 cc (2.0 L), and was a 16 valve development of the older British Leyland O-series unit first seen in 1978.
The most successful, judged by volumes, was the 16 hp (16.9) followed by 20 hp (20.9) made from 1926 to 1930. Whilst the 16 was solid and very reliable, it was a little underpowered at 2.1 litres; the 20.9 made a big jump to 3 litres and 70 bhp (52 kW; 71 PS) with similar body weight and vacuum servo brakes and was capable of 70 mph (110 km/h).
The company was started by Noel Macklin, who was looking for a new car-making venture after he sold his Invicta company in 1933. The name came from Reid Railton, the world speed record car designer, but his input was probably small, although he did receive a royalty on each car sold.

The two types of head that were bolted to the common four-cylinder block were designated K8 (8 valves) and K16 (16 valves). A later head design also incorporated a Rover-designed Variable Valve Control (VVC) unit (derived from an expired AP patent). This allowed more power to be developed without compromising low-speed torque and flexibility.
