The era of big rear-drive Pontiac sedans ended with the 1986 Parisienne.
The 1984 Dallas Grand Prix was conceived as a way to demonstrate Dallas's status as a "world-class city". [1] [2] The Formula One (F1) race took place on July 8, 1984 on a temporary street circuit in Fair Park, despite pre-race organizational problems, intense 100 °F (38 °C) heat, and poor track conditions including pavement failures.
Late in the 1983 model year, Pontiac reintroduced a full-sized car to the American market by bringing over the Canadian-built Pontiac Parisienne (which was essentially a restyled Chevrolet Caprice and powered by Chevrolet V6 or V8 engines). The Bonneville was then again one notch below the top of the line from late 1983 through 1986. [22]
The Grand Prix was an all-new model for Pontiac in the 1962 model year as a performance-oriented personal luxury car. [3] Based on the Pontiac Catalina two-door hardtop, Pontiac included unique interior trim with bucket seats and a center console in the front to make the new model a lower-priced entry in the growing personal-luxury segment. [3]
In February 1988, a new model was released, going on sale the following month: [15] the new sportier Pontiac LeMans GSE Aerocoupe, positioned similarly to the Opel Kadett GSi, was equipped with an Australian-built 95 hp (71 kW) 2.0 L four-cylinder engine also used in the Pontiac Sunbird. [8]
