Cercis occidentalis is a deciduous shrub to small tree, growing up to 7 metres (23 ft) tall. The largest individual is in Santa Rosa and is 8.8 metres (29 ft) high. Its crown is rounded on clustered, erect branches to a width of 10–20 feet (3.0–6.1 m).
This species forms a small tree up to 12 m (39 ft) in height and 10 m (32 ft) in width. [2] The deep pink flowers are produced on year-old or older growth, including the trunk, in spring. They have five free petals and fused sepals, a flower shape typical of much of the pea family . The leaves appear shortly after the first flowers emerge.
