In 2014, St. Louis was ranked as the 19th most dangerous city in the world by the Mexican aid organization CCSP-JP (El Consejo Ciudadano para la Seguridad Publica y la Justicia Penal). [32] As of 2017, St. Louis is ranked as the most dangerous city in America. There were 66 homicides per 100,000 residents.
The square park was bordered by a street on each side, with the southern street called Lafayette in honor of Revolutionary War General Marie-Joseph-Paul-Roch-Yves-Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de La Fayette, who had visited Saint Louis a few years previous during his famous 1824-25 tour of the United States.
The park was named after Father Pere Marquette in 1915 [6] and covers 17 acres (6.9 ha). [6] Father Pere Marquette (a Jesuit priest) and Louis Jolliet were the first Europeans to explore and map the northern portion of the Mississippi River. [6] The park is on the site of the House of Refuge orphanage. [7]
