Born in Milwaukee, Banks began playing soccer at age six through a Salvation Army program near the city's Westlawn Housing Projects. After graduating from Custer High School in Milwaukee, he attended first the University of Wisconsin–Parkside then the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee where he earned All-American honors playing NCAA Division I soccer as first a forward, then a midfielder.
