The high school's current location was originally built in 1929–1930 to house both St. Patrick's High School and St. Patrick's College (Ottawa), a now defunct Catholic post-secondary institution administered by the Oblate Fathers.

It was named for Saint Patrick to represent Portsmouth's large Irish American population. [2] The school, whose former primary facility was built in 1904, [3] was part of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Manchester. [4] By 2013, when the school celebrated its 145th anniversary, it was the oldest private school in Portsmouth. [2]
