The Rub' al Khali [note 1] (/ ˈ r ʊ b æ l ˈ k ɑː l i /; [1] Arabic: ٱلرُّبْع ٱلْخَالِي, [ar.rʊbʕ‿al.χaːliː]) or Empty Quarter is a desert [2] encompassing most of the southern third of the Arabian Peninsula.
