The National Origins Formula of 1921 and its final form in 1924 not only restricted the number of immigrants who might enter the United States but also assigned slots according to quotas based on national origins. The bill was so limiting that the number of immigrants coming to the U.S. between 1921 and 1922 decreased by nearly 500,000. [65]
During the 17th century, approximately 400,000 English people migrated to America under European colonization. [17] They comprised 83.5% of the white population at the time of the first census in 1790. [18] From 1700 to 1775, between 350,000 and 500,000 Europeans immigrated: estimates vary in sources.
Prior to 1660, almost all immigrants to the English colonies of North America had migrated freely, though most paid for their passage by becoming indentured servants. In that period, 871,000 Europeans immigrated to the Americas, of which over 70% were British (including Irish in that category).
