Karastan is an American brand of oriental rugs, made from 1928 to 2021 from worsted wool. In 1921, the retailer Marshall Field's established a textile mill in Eden, North Carolina, as part of its Homecrest Rug division.
The mill was built by John Calhoun Terrell and his son Francis Leonard about 1870. The mill was operated the last time around 1942 by Lowell S. Terrell, F. L.'s son. Besides the grist mill, F. L. Terrell operated a saw mill, a syrup mill, a cotton gin, a country store, a farm, and served as justice of the peace.
The store had seven floors, of 150 by 110 feet (46 m × 34 m), plus basement and mezzanine, 150,000 sq ft (14,000 m 2) in all. Departments, besides home furniture, included office and bank furniture, floor coverings (carpets, rugs, et al.), draperies mattresses (made in the company's own factories), upholstery, stoves and gas water heaters.
