Carlow County Council (Irish: Comhairle Chontae Cheatharlach) is the local authority of County Carlow, Ireland. As a county council , it is governed by the Local Government Act 2001 . The council is responsible for housing and community, roads and transportation , urban planning and development, amenity and culture , and environment . [ 1 ]
Prior to the change, South Tipperary comprised 23.8% of the South-East's land area and 19.1% of its population, making it the region's second largest county by area, and second smallest county by population. IT Carlow had been planning a joint application with Waterford IT for the formation of a Technological University for the South East region since the mid-2010s. Each Vocational Education Committee was elected by the county, borough or urban district council and consisted partly of councillors and partly of persons with an "interest and experience in education" and who could be recommended by bodies "interested in manufacture or trades".
In the spacious grounds of Carlow College is the unique National Centre for Contemporary Art and the George Bernard Shaw Theatre, which officially opened in 2009. The college generously donated a significant portion of its grounds to Carlow County Council to aid the project.
