The region of Western Macedonia is situated in north-western Greece, bordering with the regions of Central Macedonia (east), Thessaly (south), Epirus (west), and bounded to the north at the international borders of Greece with the Republic of North Macedonia (Bitola, Resen and Novaci municipalities) and Albania (Korçë County).
A 1925 study by the Greek 10th Army Division of Western Macedonia recorded 1,866 refugee families were settled in 28 villages within the Kastoria region. [13] Greek refugee families in Kastoria prefecture were from East Thrace (41), Asia Minor (441), Pontus (1,417), the Caucasus (23) and unidentified locations (9) in 1926. [8]
Kastoria (Greek: Καστοριά, Kastoriá [kastoˈrʝa]) is a city in northern Greece in the region of Western Macedonia. It is the capital of Kastoria regional unit, in the geographic region of Macedonia. It is situated on a promontory on the western shore of Lake Orestiada, in a valley surrounded by limestone mountains.
The area was part of several kingdoms of Upper Macedonia, including the ancient Eordaia and Elimiotis, and it was later part of the kingdom of Macedonia. After the Third Macedonian War it was ruled by the Roman Empire. It later became a part of the Byzantine Empire after the breakup into the West and the East.

During Philip II of Macedon's reign, the region was named Elimeia, which was part of Upper Macedonia and probably in the same place there was a town named Tyrissa (Greek: Τύρισσα). [8] In the south-west of the modern city, on Siopoto hill, there was a settlement named Kalyvia , between 1100 and 1300, traces of which are still preserved.
Grevena was created as a prefecture (Greek: Νομός Γρεβενών) in 1964, out of parts of the prefectures of Kozani and Larissa.As a part of the 2011 Kallikratis government reform, the regional unit Grevena was created out of the former prefecture Grevena.
Pisoderi ski resort Lake Prespa. Florina borders the regional units of Pella to the east, Kozani to the south and Kastoriá to the southwest. At the Greek international borders, it is adjacent to Albania (Korçë County) to the west, North Macedonia (Bitola and Resen municipalities) to the north and Lake Prespa to the northwest, where the two borders cross each other.
