The Intercontinental Cup, officially the European/South American Cup and known from 1980 as the Toyota Cup for sponsorship reasons, [a] was an international football competition endorsed by UEFA (Europe) and CONMEBOL (South America), [1] [2] contested between representative clubs from these confederations, usually the winners of the UEFA Champions League and the South American Copa Libertadores.
In addition to the Intercontinental Cup final, trophies were awarded to the winning teams of the African–Asian–Pacific Cup (contested by the AFC, CAF and OFC representatives), Derby of the Americas (contested by the CONCACAF and CONMEBOL representatives) and Challenger Cup (contested by the winners of the two aforementioned matches). After the events of the 1969 Intercontinental Cup, many European Cup champions refused to play in the Intercontinental Cup. On five occasions, they were replaced by the tournament's runners-up. Two Intercontinental Cups were called off after the runners-up also declined to participate. [1]
