Known as Facultad de Derecho Civil, the University of Santo Tomas Faculty of Civil Law is the oldest lay college in the University as well in the Philippines. [1] It was established on September 2, 1734, the same year that the Faculty of Canon Law was founded, with a curriculum identical to that adopted during the time in leading universities in Europe.
The institute was granted a full autonomy in 1993 and became independent in 2000. [4] [5] In 2006, the Institute of Tourism and Hospitality Management was founded from the College of Education. It became an independent college in 2008.
The surrounding inscription reads the full name of UST: Pontifical and Royal University of Santo Tomas, Manila, and the foundation year, 1611. The symbols are set on a field of Marian blue. The colors, as officially defined by the university's identity guidelines, define the gold and blue as Pantone 213 C and Pantone 298 C, respectively.
The college is located in the third and fourth levels of Saint Raymund de Peñafort Building in the northeastern part of the UST campus. The college shares the building with the UST Faculty of Arts and Letters which occupies the first and second levels. On July 5, 2015, the building was hit by fire affecting at least 4 classrooms. [5]

With the revision of the curriculum in the academic year 2001–2002, the A.B. Classical (civil degree) may be obtained in three years. By granting the privilege of an "autonomous status" to the university by the Philippine government in 2002, an ecclesiastical degree may be given its civil degree equivalent.
