The Air War College was founded in 1946 by the United States War Department (subsequently merged with the Navy Department to form the Department of Defense) as a U.S. Army Air Forces program at what was then Maxwell Field. The college has operated continuously since its founding except for a period of six months during the Korean War. [4]
In the Air Force, Primary is Squadron Officer School (SOS), [2] Intermediate is Air Command and Staff College (ACSC), [3] and Senior is Air War College (AWC). [4] Basic was the Air and Space Basic Course (ASBC), but it is inactive as of July 2011. [5] Typically Captains take SOS, Majors attend ACSC, and Lt Colonels or Colonels take Air War College.
Classes began at the Air War College and the Air Command and Staff School on 4 September 1946, fulfilling the "dream for education in airpower" of most post-war AAF leaders and planners. The Air Tactical School, the junior officer PME program of the AU educational system, began classes at Tyndall in January 1947.
Students at these academies are organized as cadets, and graduate with appropriate licenses from the U.S. Coast Guard and/or the U.S. Merchant Marine.While not immediately offered a commission as an officer within a service, cadets do have the opportunity to participate in commissioning programs like the Strategic Sealift Officer Program (Navy) and Maritime Academy Graduate (Coast Guard).
