The trail runs approximately 11 miles (18 km) along the island's north shore from Keʻe Beach to the Kalalau Valley. Just before the Kēʻē beach is the Kalalau Trail trailhead, an 11-mile (18 km) footpath that is the only land access to Nā Pali Coast State Park. The area surrounding the beaches is vegetated by ironwood trees, coconut palms , ti , and guava .
The trail can be reached via the Pihea Vista trail, which is connected to the Puʻu o Kila lookout on Waimea Canyon road. This road is located behind a gate that is directly next to the Kalalau Valley lookout. Due to frequent rainfall, potholes are formed and the road is often closed. The end of this trail overlooks Hanalei Bay in the distance.

Spelaeorchestia koloana, the Kauaʻi cave amphipod or ʻuku noho ana in Hawaiian, is a cave-dwelling crustacean only found on the Hawaiian island of Kauaʻi. It is eyeless and measures 7–10 mm (0.28–0.39 in) long. [3] It is only known from 10 populations, [4] and eats decaying plant matter and other decomposing material.
Manawaiopuna Falls (colloquially known as Jurassic Falls) is a waterfall in the Hawaiian Islands, located in Hanapepe Valley on Kauai Island. It is 122 metres (400 ft) tall. [1] It featured in the background of several scenes in the 1993 Steven Spielberg film Jurassic Park. [2] The waterfall is only accessible by helicopter. [1]
The site is apparently geologically unique in the Hawaiian Islands, comprising a sinkhole paleolake in a cave formed in eolianite limestone. The paleolake contains nearly 10,000 years of sedimentary record; since the discovery of Makauwahi as a fossil site, excavations have found pollen, seeds, diatoms, invertebrate shells, and Polynesian artifacts, as well as thousands of bird and fish bones.
