Fairfax Municipal Airport (known as Fairfax Field during World War II) was a Kansas City, Kansas airfield from 1921 that was used during 1935–1949 by the military. Federal land adjacent to the airfield included a WWII B-25 Mitchell plant and modification center and a Military Air Transport terminal.
The airfield and other facilities at Richards-Gebaur were returned to the City of Kansas City, Missouri, in 1985. Between 1983 and 1997 the city of Kansas City lost $18 million operating Richards-Gebaur Memorial Airport and in 1998, the Federal Aviation Administration approved a plan to close the airport.
For the 12-month period ending June 14, 2010, the airport had 9,000 aircraft operations, an average of 24 per day: 94% general aviation, 3% air taxi, and 2% military. At that time there were 19 aircraft based at this airport: 74% single- engine and 26% multi-engine.
