Belleville was named after a mining official. [2] Variant names were "Bellville" and "Zincite". [ 1 ] A post office called Zincite was established in 1885, and remained in operation until 1918.
The plant closed on August 7, 1986, its future essentially sealed when GM closed the Caprice/Impala assembly on August 1, 1980 and began developing a new factory, Wentzville Assembly — a then-state of the art, 3.7 million square foot plant on 569 acres approximately 40 miles (64 km) west of St. Louis, just off of I-70.
Chevrolet Assembly Division was a designation used from 1933 to 1965. Fisher Body produced trimmed out bodies (firewall rearward) and then passed the bodies to the Chevrolet Assembly Division which completed the assembly of the vehicle. To streamline production, the General Motors Assembly Division was created that incorporated both divisions.
As of 2020, Flint Truck Assembly currently produces the Chevrolet Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD Regular, Double, and Crew Cab models. [10] The plant is the sole production facility for GMC Sierra HD and Chevrolet Silverado HD dual-rear-wheel (dually) models. It splits the production of single-rear-wheel Silverado HDs with Oshawa, Ontario.
