Chequers Ring, three-quarter profile The Chequers Ring is one of the few surviving pieces of jewellery worn by Queen Elizabeth I of England. The mother-of-pearl ring, set with gold and rubies, includes a locket with two portraits, one depicting Elizabeth and the other traditionally identified as Elizabeth's mother Anne Boleyn, but possibly her step-mother Catherine Parr.
It consisted of three rows of pearls with a turquoise and pearl cluster clasp; the clasp was only visible when it matched the colour of her outfit, otherwise hidden at the back. The Princess later altered the clasp to be all pearls. [1] One of the first gifts Diana received from Prince Charles was an eternity ring which she wore regularly. [8]
Mother's ring A ring worn by a mother displaying the birthstone of each of her children, and sometimes including those of the mother and father. [citation needed] Mourning ring: A ring worn in memory of someone who has died. [29] Also commonly called a "memorial ring". Use attested from at least the 14th century AD to the late 19th century. [3]: 299 Practice became to keep twelve stones and wear one a month. [ 3 ] : 298 The custom of wearing a single birthstone is only a few centuries old, though modern authorities differ on dates. Kunz places the custom in eighteenth-century Poland , while the Gemological Institute of America starts it in Germany in the 1560s.
The ring had been a gift from Elizabeth, with her promise to help. [234] Elizabeth gave her reply to her diplomat Robert Beale, saying her promise of help was offered before Darnley was killed. [235] Mary sent rings as gifts and tokens over the coming years, in January 1581 to James VI, probably intended as a New Year's Day gift. [236]
