This is a list of current and former Roman Catholic churches in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Detroit. The archdiocese is divided into four administrative regions: Central (including the cities of Detroit and Hamtramck) Northeast (including Macomb and St. Clair Counties) Northwest (including Oakand and Lapeer Counties)
The first Catholic presence in present-day Michigan was that of the French Jesuit missionaries, Reverends Charles Raymbaut and Isaac Jogues. The two priests stopped near what is now Sault Ste. Marie in 1641 to visit the Chippewa Nation. [6] In 1670, Reverend Claude Dablon established the first Catholic mission in the region on Mackinac Island.
St. Joseph Shrine (formerly St. Joseph Oratory and St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church), founded in 1855, is a historic German Catholic church located at 1828 Jay Street in the Eastern Market–Lafayette Park neighborhood area just outside downtown Detroit, Michigan, on the city's central east side.
The Saint Paul Catholic Church Complex is located at 157 Lake Shore Road in the Detroit suburb of Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan. In the late 1850s, Belgian Catholics immigrated to Detroit and settled in the eastside neighborhoods near Gratiot and Baldwin. [3] In 1886, a parish dedicated to St. Charles Borromeo was established to minister to this congregation. [3] A wood-frame church was constructed for the parish, and quickly expanded.
The Archdiocese sold the structure to University of Michigan organist Sam Koontz of Ann Arbor, MI in 1989. The congregation of Promise Land Missionary Baptist Church purchased the church from Koontz's estate in 1995, but lost it through foreclosure in September 2012. A directory of Roman Catholic institutions from the 1960s listed 108 Catholic grade schools in Detroit, Hamtramck, and Highland Park. [2] By 2005 suburban flight contributed to the decline of Catholic schools in the Detroit area. There were no Catholic schools left in Hamtramck by that year, and in the Detroit city limits there were 12. [3]
Kelly was born near Kilkenny, Ireland in 1802 and came to America in 1821. He came to Detroit in 1829 and served various parishes around the diocese before being appointed as pastor of Oakland and Livingston counties in 1843 and founding St. Augustine. [2] In 1843, Kelly purchased two acres near this site for a church and cemetery.
