White River National Forest is a National Forest in northwest Colorado. It is named after the White River that passes through its northern section. It is the most visited National Forest in the United States, primarily from users of the twelve ski areas within its boundaries. The forest contains 2,285,970 acres (3,571.8 sq mi, or 9,250.99 km 2).
Flat Top Wilderness location is in red. Flat Tops Wilderness Area is the second largest U.S. Wilderness Area in Colorado.It is 235,214 acres (951.88 km 2), with 38,870 acres (157.3 km 2) in Routt National Forest and 196,344 acres (794.58 km 2) in White River National Forest.

White River NWR borders on Cache River National Wildlife Refuge at its northern boundary. In 1974, the White River Sugarberry Natural Area was designated as a National Natural Landmark by the National Park Service.
