Stockholm County was established in 1714. The City of Stockholm then constituted its own administrative entity under the Governor of Stockholm and was not part of Stockholm County. Though outside Stockholm County, the City of Stockholm was its seat. On 1 January 1968, Stockholm County was united with the City of Stockholm.
In 2000, the Church of Sweden was separated from the state. Sweden was the second Nordic country to disestablish its state church (after Finland did so in the Church Act of 1869). [256] At the end of 2022, 52.8% of Swedes belonged to the Church of Sweden; [257] this number has been decreasing by 1-2 percentage points each year since 2001.
