The Downeaster began service, with a stop at the newly renovated Haverhill station, on December 14, 2001. [1] Haverhill station was temporarily closed for MBTA service on July 15, 2024, for replacement of the South Elm Street bridge in Bradford. Bradford station will be the outer terminal of the line until Haverhill station reopens in mid-2025.
If the Downeaster were to run solely on the Haverhill Line, it would conflict with the local commuter rail service on a largely single-tracked rail line, since the Amtrak train makes no stops between Woburn and Haverhill. By using the Wildcat Branch to cross between the Lowell and Haverhill lines, the Downeaster can pass a Haverhill train.

Several Amtrak intercity routes run on MBTA tracks: the Acela and Northeast Regional over the Providence/Stoughton Line, the Lake Shore Limited over the Framingham/Worcester Line, and the Downeaster over portions of the Lowell and Haverhill lines. [5] Private companies also operate freight service over much of the system (see § Freight service).
